Problem with Voices
Hi
Since the update when i go on the server and when someone talk it sound like robot voices and i can't understand anything
Is anyone have the same problem? And is anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks!

Thanks to Sad Sack for this solution

"I had the same sound issue. Resolved (finally) by removing my Half-Life and DOD games by the following method:
Uninstalling the games in Steam, then moved directories to new loacation off main hard disk (to keep all the old stuff) then I went back into Steam and installed Half-Life then DOD.

All works and I have been able to re-instate most settings I had before in my userconfig. Note: Seems some console commands for DOD do not work anymore. Got error "unknown command" for a few commands after restoring some userconfig entries.
Note: DOD directory is under Half-Life directory. Any new maps u download when playing on an internet server are now loaded into a directory called "dod_downloads\maps" which is located in the Half-Life directory. Maps that came with DOD install are still in the "dod\maps" directory also now under the Half-Life directory.

Disapointed that Steam/Valve did not put out some document to explain some of these changes of directory structure etc. to the players and Server Admins in the DOD community. "

And thanks to {KHH}Yes Sir too

"I uninstalled everything including Steam. Down loaded Steam again and all is well. I had to uninstall Steam because just uninstalling my games did not fix the problem. Make sure you save your old game configs and maps or you will have to start from scratch again. It may be a good idea to start from scratch just incase something in your old config was creating the problem. This gave me a good time to get rid of old files and configs that did not work. You will also see that they put the DoD files in a different folder but every thing is there that you need to play the game. You will have to reinstall your games from your steam library but that is no big deal. Hope this helps someone with their problems."

Valve updated DoD yesterday, you need to update/reinstall it.

Have same audio (Voice) issue. Have removed and re-installed 3 times. All else seems fine except Audio (Voice) issue. Have put ticket into Steam but no answer from them and I have not seen an answer to the issue on the forums.

I Have the same problem, and it looks as though its very common amongst players on servers that I use. Its becoming a real pain and ruining the gaming experience.

I was told to update my drivers. What drivers?
Folks,

With these recent so-called "updates" that Valve has forced upon us and made mandatory:

The new updates to ALL of the GoldSource games (CS/CS:CZ/DoD/HL/HL:BS/HL:DMC/HL:OF) have a different voice codec that used for in-game voice chatting. The old ones were Miles and SpeeX, but the new voice codec is the same that is used by the actual Steam Client itself... "Silk" (which is an audio codec from "Skype").

What this means is:

If you have fully (and successfully) "updated" DoD (yeah, best of luck with that one)... anyone who has NOT fully updated yet will not be able to voice chat with you within the game (and vice-versa). The players' voices will sound like an alien robot.

And like I said, vice-versa as well... the people that have NOT "updated" yet will hear the same from players who HAVE "updated" DoD on their computers.

P.S.

I don't know who told you that (Valve's tech "support" maybe? Sure sounds like something that they would advise.), but it's PURE rubbish... as the problem is what I detailed above.

ve.

Okay, so can we access/update the codecs ourselves? If so, how and where?

I use to run opengl video in the options setting. After the update, the video and voice wer lagging like crazy. I switched over to software renderer and all is fixed. Looks like opengl was dropped from video options.

I've been wracking my brain around that one since the first so-called "updates" were released for Half-Life and Counter-Strike... still no joy though.

I myself run the older "rolled back" version of the game(s) (BEFORE these USELESS and PROBLEMATIC updates) So, of course, I hear the alien robot chat voices from any players that have actually managed to do the update on their PCs.

That being said, I'm still experimenting (and looking for) a fix for this (to update just the voice codec for my un-updated versions of these games)... as I will NOT update DoD (or ANY of my other GoldSource games) to the new cobbled-up so-called "updated" versions.

P.S. If I knew specifically what file (or files) was used for the codec, I might be able to figure something out (for the OLDER versions of the games). I'm SURE that one file that would need to be edited is the "HW.dll" file, but I don't know the filenames for the NEW codec DLLs (the old ones were/are "Voice_Miles.dll" and "Voice_SpeeX.dll", which the "HW.dll" file referenced).

There are no answers. Tried everything so far zilch! I did noticed that my Dod config file is no longer where it use to be. The copies are there but not the game config file. WWT!

Even after updating I cannot hear others who have also updated. So...I hadn't noticed until now, but looking at the Voice tab I see that next to the asterisk is says "Uses Miles Sound System." That's older than the Speex. WTH? Will look into this further when I get back in a bit.
