Go to DoD launch options in library & add following -w 800 -h 600
& launch the game.
Remember to remove it once your settings are done.

On your steam library game listing right click on "Day of Defeat"
I must be an idiot. I'm on the steam website and I see no tab labeled library. Under my profile it shows activity, but right clicking that does nothing. I just reinstalled DoD and it comes up super zoomed in so I can't change settings.

If your screen is zoomed in and you cant see the menu do this with DOD not CS.

If your screen goes black do this but with DOD not CS.

I did this, the game starts out normally, but then switches to zoom mode. If I select options, it comes up super zoomed and I can't change video settings. When I make the change to launch settings, do i have to restart steam, the CPU?
OK, I missed the spaces. Game comes up, my player name has been reset to "player", and when i go to join the game i get an error that says "disconnected - client world model is NULL". What does that mean?

When you get your menu back you need to remove those setting from the startup, or they override any changes you make in the graphics menu.

Next make sure both half-life and DOD are up to date by right clicking the game in your library > properties > update tab > set to "always keep this game up to date".

then verify both Half-life & dod, From the Library section right-click on the game select Properties from the menu.
Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache button.

And if that doesn`t help try the method in the second post below.

hope this helps
Livewire: I tried your method and also the second post. I can connect to a DoD server playing Caen map just fine. The only map i play is on a server at IP address 192.223.29.57:27015. When I try to connect to that map i still get the "client world model is NULL" message and it disconnects me. Why would it only be this website?

when you say "website " you mean server? ..well that server has a issue with there player model sounds like , not anything you can do on your end other than try and contact them ..if at all possibile that is
