Increasing Difficulty
Can some explain how the difficulty changes in this game? I've been playing about 6 hours with friends and we finally had a good thing going up to the rooftops. And then we fight leatherhead and now he has frogs with him and we end up losing at least one revive in that fight. We had fought him 10 times before without frogs. When do bosses "level up" like this?

I don't know the exact number but its based on the amount of runs beating that boss. Not the amount of completed runs. So you could never even make it to the boat and leatherhead can get stronger and you could never make it to the roof tops and karai will get stronger.
It's also when you go into the blue portals. If you accept the challenges, the enemies get increased stats it seems. I've noticed it's shields on almost all enemies.

It's a Roguelike. There's a random chance that bosses will be different/have a modifier even if you don't take a challenge portal. Like Dark Karai, or the frogs joining Leatherhead.

It's not a run/progress thing.

Each boss has a random mode that is selected when the battle starts.
Leatherhead has loner, frogs, or rats
Karai has normal, flame, and shadow
etc etc

Dark Karai isn't random, there is a gauge that fills up as you attack her, along with a meter.

Not in the challenge mode theres no meter but if you don't take the challenge the meter is there but Karai stays on dark every run i did on challenge mode

Well there two difficulty increases aside from easy and normal mode. One is portal where you take on selected disadvantage offered through playthrough chapters in exchange for higher amount of ressource rewards, other is gauntlet challenges these the boss is typically much harder hitting and more sturdy plus they have far more challenging specials which are much more difficult to evade than on easy or normal non gauntlet bosses.

Most it is the aoe and ground attacks being very difficult and on occasion impossible to evade due to overlapping, you typically also have to deal with elite adds on top the boss when doing gauntlet bosses.
I've gotten frogs on leatherhead non stop since it started doing it. I dunno how the 'random' works in this game, but if feels like its the default mode for him to have frogs now.

I thought i was just because I was leveling up my character back in the lair with the dragon and dreamer coins, so definitely didn't think it was a random effect.

It kind of makes the game not fun, thats for sure. I like the idea of having some sort of say in the difficulty so that the efforts I make to farm out currency actually feel like its producing a result. Not much point in boosting hp and attack power if every match I go into is going to make my character feel weaker than he was before I spent the coins.

I've quit my runs the last few matches once I seen frogs on leatherhead. The difficulty of that doesn't match my turtles stats. If I can't beat leatherhead with both my lives coming out, its likely I wont beat the next bosses, and the run is a moot point.

I understand the logic behind it because the game is short, but I think they could do a better job by just adding further difficulties to choose from. Maybe thats their plan later, but right now, spending coins and still getting pooped on in easy or normal mode feels disappointing. I literally feel like my turtle is just as weak now as he was in the first run, and Ive upped my dragon stats quite a bit. Seems like a waste of time to even take the coins if they just make the game harder.
