Final question, if you don't mind: are all chess matches always played using the animated battle "eye candy" I saw in videos, or is there also a standard (aka 'boring') chess interface with typical piece graphics? And speaking of interface, do you know if there are any extras, like moves history/annotation, opening moves db--stuff you'd expect to find in a normal chess program--or is it pretty barebones?
Thanks again for filling me in--I couldn't find much about the regular chess stuff when I searched, everything seems focused on the multiplayer/melee aspect of the game (which sadly appears to be in the grave anyway).
There are 3 display modes for the chess board you can choose:
1: Animated Pieces
2. Simple symbols on the board squares to represent pieces(color coded and etc); essentially the basic piece graphics you mentioned
3. Both combined
