Quest bugged: place the sign and furniture

I gave the quest sign to Kunugi on accident and now I can't finish the quest. When I place a normal sign down it won't count it towards completion.

Kind of a screwed situation to be in. Was hoping there would be a chest somewhere I could repickup lost items or at bare minimum a normal sign would count, but it seems the developers made unique quest item ids for quest items.

I think you are just using a wrong sign. I've seen town sign recipe in the shop on your island. Maybe you need it instead.

Unfortunately I have the island sign. Once I noticed that the quest sign was gone I went and purchased the recipe to try to make it. I've tested normal signs and perfect made ones, neither works for the quest.
