Ian gave me a Strangeling...

Odd thing, I've maxed out Ian as a companion and he suddenly ran up to me in camp and handed me a Strangeling, but it was a duplicate of himself. Not sure if it's intentional but I suppose if it is you don't need to decide between restoring their form and keeping them as decoration. Side note I did try to see if I can restore him again but he doesn't show up in the list.

It's just a decoration, not a strangeling, that's also why this weird ghost icon isn't visible on it.

Yeah it is merely a decoration. When you max out the rep of someone.
They tend to gift you a version of themselves. That exists for the sole purpose for placing down.
