Multiplayer online is limited to 1 hour sessions and challenges and ACCEPTING new NPC quests is not available. Poop dungeon activity is also singleplayer only in the open world.
To play this properly co-op you will need to purchase a 2nd copy of the game, and get to the place where you have a guild hall. Then you can join each other.
Life skills can progress in online co-op
Local Co-op where one player takes control of the little bird for a few functions? Yes
Multiplayer is really for grinding the trove dungeon and big open world area which is basically mid to end game, but it can be as early as a few hours in if you decide to ignore story in favor of grinding together
I read something along the line like "remote play together" works with the bird too. Could be worth a try
If you wanna do story together, the local-coop mechanic is the only way to do so, unless you mod and swap out Trip with a NPC character, and use remote play so someone can control that stronger character.
Or better idea if a mod lets multiple remote players control the other NPC party members so you can play in a story.
