Buddy Equipment
Is there really no way to change buddy equipment without changing your party formation first? It would be really nice if they could add a new menu to the Weird Pad that lets you manage all your buddies gear from one place.

You should be able to change it from the equipment menu.

The one saving grace is that you can change party formation wherever your dragon is, but yea, a new menu would be nice or an addition to an existing menu.

That being said, does gear matter for inactive buddies while crafting?

I believe their tool tier does. At least for those you plop into the crafting benches.
One way to unequip items from inactive buddies is go to your equipment, equip your character with the item(s) the inactive buddy has equipped. This will unequip the buddy without having to assign them to your party.

You can then re-equip your old gear.

Useful if you accidentally equipped an item you need for a quest to a buddy and you can’t remember which one.
I'm more surprised it's a oversight that they don't let you choose a buddy to equip something to, using the more options functionality (square button) when you highlight a item.

Also you can't save a equipment set and then load it onto all the buddies, it only strictly ties exact items in the set that can be worn.

So if you make 20 standard armor set and make a loadout, you will only overwrite 1 out of 20 of that armor set to move onto different buddies.

You can have 50 strangeling NPCs to live in your base, so that means 50 x 6 armor slot items that will take up 1 slot in your inventory.

That's 300 slots for 50 NPCs if they all wear armor. Out of 999 total slots for armor pieces.

I guess you brought up this issue because of crafters. If that's the case then you can actually change gear without adding them to the party. Just go to the buddy selection list on the crafting window, and you have a button to change gear there.
So if you're crafting with a buddy you can "change out" your buddy then theres an option to change their equipment before they are chosen for a spot, fighting buddies are harder to change equipment but hope that helps.

yea they should put a menu in for that

The Characters menu should just list everybody you've unlocked. Sometimes I wanna take a peek at what people have, what level they're at, etc. without actually swapping them.
