How do I get excellent during mining, or woodcutting?
How do I get excellent during mining or woodcutting? I got it time to time randomly, but is there a trick to this?

You need to "overkill" the tree/rock. The trick is simple : put it really low hp and use your highest daming move on the weak point. I don't know the math but the lower the remaining hp of the tree/rock the less damage you have to do. To easily get excellent I recommend to quickly unlock the charge attack (left side of the skill tree) if you haven't already done so

Always charge attack the last hit. Watch your health bar, try to eyeball how much it goes down by each hit, get it at/under 10%, as close to 1% as possible without actually breaking it, then charge (and optionally pray you crit). Should get you an excellent pretty much every time as long as it's in relative level range.

Other than that? Just play the game, you'll wrack them up eventually if you just keep using the skill.
Do people not read the extremely simplistic tutorial popups?
You need to do about 10-25% more damage than it has hp (estimate). So do a big hit to get an idea of how much damage you do and take off 15% of the hp bar from that big hit. Take that remainder and compare to the remaining hp bar, that is where you want to drain the hp to before big hitting.

Example
Your charge attack does 35% of the hp bar, 35-15 is 20. So about when the enemy has 20% left, finish it with a charged attack.

Note: Don't forget to account for the hp regen.

You mean the tutorial that tells you nothing except that you need to do enough damage without telling you how much enough is?

Wh...what?

It says to do a lot of damage on the last hit. A 1st grader could understand that if they aren't seeing "Excellent" after the last hit, then they...didn't do enough damage, and need to do more. What more do you need? Do you want a guide to how much damage the last hit has to have on every level of every material? If you don't see excellent, you didn't do enough damage. It's literally that simple.

You need to get the charge attack from the skill tree in order to get "Excellents!!" reliably when the Gathering Spot has super low health left. The heavy attack that uses "Y" on the last hit isn't enough. It took me a while to figure that out since the numbers required to get Excellent gatherings are higher compared to the first game.
