Haven’t heard of improv crafting yet. Interesting!

It's a skill you get in the Alchemy and some other trees. I'm not sure how to do it but I'm guessing after you buy it in the alchemy tree you get an option to do it from the workbench.

Alchemy, Art and Cooking have improv crafting after the 2 star auto craft node. Once you unlock that, you'll find a purple question mark option in the category you have improv crafting unlocked for when you're crafting in your bench.
