How do I plant the sapling on my island? Do I need the farming life?

No, go to your base camp, and to the west of stairs to the goddess statue is a slightyly raised platform with a statue and a glowing hole.

This might be spoilers.

Advance the story far enough to help the big tree. That will unlock farming and give you a sapling. You can then plant it in your base where ever there is a spot that says something can be planted. The first is just to the left and above the guild hall (facing it).
