You choose an activity and then the activity starts and is on a timer (depending on which activity you do). And at the end you have an end screen.
I get why it's like that to party with random people but to play with friends it's a bit odd.
I haven't had enough time with it yet to make a definitive judgement but to me the only point of multiplayer is exploring Ginomorsia and doing dungeons, and eventually visting your friend's islands.
But don't expect progressing your quests together. It seems you can't even craft in multiplayer which is kinda wild to me but I'm unsure about this one because it specified in your base so it might be doable elsewhere (I doubt it).
I can understand the multi platform and the fact that Level 5 wants to protect children put a lot of limits on online multiplayer but the no crafting, no quest and constant timer is a bit overkill when you play with friends.
The timed aspect doesn't allow for idling while you/your friend grinds. The restricted activities prevents you from doing a story co-op playthrough with your friend. The isolated areas prevents multitasking different regions at once.
I hate to say this because I am truly enjoying this game but I will most likely not enjoy multiplayer compared to the previous entry. [Unless this is somehow an advanced access which I am HOPING it is.]
