Stalls on startup, locks up computer

When I first ran Dark Sector, it just gave me a black screen and replaced the mouse cursor with a loading icon and I couldnt do anything.

I uninstalled PhysX, installed the version that came with Dark Sector, and it still wouldnt run. I reinstalled the most recent version of PhysX on top of that and now when I run Dark Sector it drops the resolution down to 800x600 and never starts the game. When I pull up task manager when it's like this, it says Dark Sector is not responding.

What else can I do? I really want to try this game since it's by the same guys who made Warframe!

I found that on Microsoft's compatibility checker, the game is listed as Not Compatible with Windows 8.1. I dont really trust any information that comes from Microsoft, but things are looking bleak for getting it to run. Compatibility mode, a fresh install of Nvidia PhysX, and applying the Resolution fix pinned to the Steam forum for this game all do nothing. Starting Dark Sector up locks up my computer so badly I have to ctrl+alt+delete and sign out to get control of my computer again.

Just tested it on multiple computers. It ran on both computers that were running windows 7 without issue, and crashed like this running both computers that were running Windows 8.1. Dark Sector really is not compatible with Windows 8.1... friggin Microsoft.

i run Windows 7 but for me Dark Sector freezes every 10 seconds and then crashes after about 5 minutes, cant even play it to get the lore :(

Works fine on windows 8.1 the main problem this game has is with the Physx driver issue, With it looking for the older legacy files that are not included in the newer Nvidia files. I did actually put a fix up a while ago that worked for some people http://steamcommunity.com/app/29900/discussions/0/611698195166791479/

Hey Oddballs, thanks for your guide. For other out there, I had the same problem (black screen wouldn't loads). I mostly followed Oddballs advice:

1: Uninstalled Physx
2: Installed physx that came with game

then ran the game. Worked like a charm.
