Thanks for the Free Game (+Linux Fixes)
The game doesn't work. Crashes on load. Even with the widescreen mod mentioned in the one pinned discussion, anything about 1920x1080 leaves a bar of stuck pixels on the right side that will replicate your mouse windows xp style.

Now, in a bit of fairness, the game is old, I got it for free and I'm running Proton on Arch Linux. However, with how far Proton has come, the fact that it doesn't run shows inherent flaws in the code. I appreciate the free game but until it gets an actual fix, I can't even consider trying to play it.

Digital Extremes, if you want someone to work on the code, open source it or reach out to players like me and others passionate about the project. Give me an NDA and let me dig into the code.

Cheers.

Update: I should have spent more time poking at it to get it working honestly. Peeps in the chat had some great suggestions and it does in fact work.

1. Place the game on your primary hard drive. (This is true for any early programmed game really.)

2. Use Proton v7.06. (While newer versions of proton run most anything, old games thrive on older versions of proton.)

Thank you everyone and I apologize for my lack of patience in this matter.

Might be a linux related issue but, did you try installing the game on your main drive?

Installing the game on the same drive as the one with your OS might fix some of the issues you have.

But this was the case for Windows, not Linux, so it might not work for you.

It runs fairly well on Steam Deck though.

I'd probably ask for a refund.

I got it running then got to some stupid area in the sewers and it's just not even at all clear what you're supposed to do. Infinite spawning enemies. Uninstalled.

You have a good point with this tweak. Thank you for this.

You have a good point. I stay so far on the bleeding edge that I forget to consider older versions of proton. This was the golden key so thank you for that.

As the others mentioned, running Proton 7.06 and having the game on your main storage device does the trick.

As someone who champions Linux above other, less trustworthy options, I should have tried more to get it working. Do more research. I'll be honest, I didnt give it enough time the first attempt. I appreciate all of those who chimed in.

Brother, now you are part of the research. I had the same problem until I got to this post
7.0-6 also fixes the game crashing when trying to manually load into a specific chapter too from chapter select, dunno if it's also related to the helicopter crash.
