What does gear up and gear down do?

In what situations would I actually use these in? Does any one actually use these?

Well when you have a car there are two types of transmissions, manual and automatic. Automatic changes gears for you and is what most typical race game users are used to i.e. push up arrow and the car goes forward indefinitely. If you want to replicate a manual transmission where you have to change the gears yourself then tick that option and once the car reaches roughly max speed in that gear range (Car won't go any further) change gears by pressing the gear up button (z from memory).
