How to use Xinput controller - including menu navigation

1. Click on STEAM, then SETTINGS

2. CONTROLLER, and then GENERAL CONTROLLER SETTINGS

3. Enable XBOX CONFIGURATION SUPPORT. After this, close the CONTROLLER SETTINGS window.

4. Launch the game.

5. When in game, press SHIFT + TAB to open the STEAM OVERLAY.

6. On the STEAM OVERLAY, click on CONTROLLER CONFIGURATION.

7. Click on BROWSE CONFIGS.

8. Click on COMMUNITY, and then select the XINPUT WITH MENU NAVIGATION.

9. Back into the game, select CONTROLLER as input methods, in the OPTIONS menu.

10. If it doesn't work as soon as you get out of STEAM OVERLAY, exit the game and launch again.

I just checked now and it is there.

You can also try other configs with a high upvote count. As of now, the top 3 are:

FlameX360 by FlameMan
FlatOut 2 by AbnerJ
Xinput w/ Menu Navigation by Demon27248 (the one I mention in the first post)

I'm using the FlameX360 configuration and it works well except for the Nitro button that is supposed to be the A button on an Xbox controller. It doesn't do anything.

EDIT: The A button didn't do anything because I changed my keyboard mapping for Nitro from the Control key to the Shift key. If you didn't do this, the default FlameX360 settings should work for you.

old post but what is it with all the menu navigation ones not using the triggers at all? The only ones I see, including the most popular ones, only use dpad for steering and driving?
