Warhammer books related to Deathwing?
Anyone have suggestions for a WH40k book that will get me in the mood to play Deathwing? Hopefully something similar to the settings we should expect to see in the game (space hulks, terminator armor, genestealers, etc). I know there is a book called "Deathwing" which appears to be short stories, from various authors, not necessarily related to each other.

Anyone here well versed in WH40k lore that can make some reccomendations? Thanks!

Just read the wikis on them honestly. There's a lot off fluff out on the Dark Angels and the Fallen in general.

Im down with wikis too I suppose. I don't know much about WH40k or Deathwing, but are the Dark Angels the space marine clan featured in the game?

The Deathwing are the first company of the Darkangels, the elite. The Dark Angels and their sucessors (chapters that share the same gene code) are called The Unforgiven. The traitor Dark Angels are call The Fallen.

They're all interrelated and you can't really understand one without understanding the other. In a nut shell....

Back in the civil war half the dark angels turned traitor were and half didn't. The details are kept vague and at times it's confusing as to just how traitor the traitors were and just how loyal the loyalists were. Because of this the dark angels and their gene brothers are secretive as ♥♥♥♥ and known for backstabbing and pursuing their own objectives without telling people, to the point of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ over allies, killing allies, or abandoning them to certain death.

Even most dark angels and their brothers don't know why and aren't told. Only their true elite and senior leadership know, IE the Deathwing. Which makes the dark angels first company, and it's relationship with their chapter buddies, vastly more complex than normal. The main reason is that they are hunting the traitors, and they don't want anyone to know.

The thing is it's obvious that some factions know full well about the traitor issues, they just don't give a ♥♥♥♥ as the dark angles are reliable legion that gets ♥♥♥♥ done. It's also not fully clear the extent or even reality of the treason. It was a much more complex situation and the traitors weren't (for the most part) full on chaos evil, some are even good. And the loyalists themselves don't come out looking clean either. Again it's vague as all hell, but it comes off leaving the impression that the current darkangels and deathwing are very loyal, but their obsession with secrecy and righting this old wrong has lead to an amount of secrecy and over the top foolishness that is probably causing them more problems than it's worth.

It's confusing but it makes them one of the more interesting space marine factions because their motivations are much more complex than the rest. If one of the more tragic. Because the exact people they should be worried about finding out about all of this, ie the Inquistion, know full ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ well and frankly could care less. The only issues they care about are the legion building and backstabbing which only happen to help keep it a secret.

Well, basically Space Marines are divided in Chapters. Each Chapters has a different name and color scheme. They act completely independently and have autonomous organization, hyerarchy and rules. Every Chapter is supposed to have 1000 members, divided into 10 companies of 100 members (not everyone follows this guidance). 1st Company contains the veterans and more experienced Marines, as a general rule.
The Dark Angels are the chapter in this game. They were the 1st SM legion (10.000 years ago SMs were organized in legions of thousands of soldiers, before being reformed) ever created. They are one of the most secretive Chapters, with personal and undisclosed objectives. Their 1st Company, named Deathwing, is unique. It is entirely composed of veterans deploying in Terminator armor. A particularly rare and powerful exoskeleton only available in small numbers to every chapter (but not them, apparently). So in this game you play as one of these veteran terminators of the 1st company of the Dark Angels.

- This is something that tells the back-story of the Deathwing's bone-white armour color.
- It's considered a classic from the early 90s, when the lore(fluff) of the 40k was really new & it layed the cornerstones of the fluff as we know it.

The color used to be black for the Deathwing.

It's not entirely small numbers for every chapter. Not every chapters armories are the same and the older chapters tend to have access to lots of goodies that other chapters don't, other chapters are favorites to various authorities. Case in point the Minotaurs have access to loads of ♥♥♥♥ that other chapters don't because the high lords and inquisition love them.

There are chapters that have no terminators due to having theirs wiped out and being unable to get more, and those who have loads of it but often don't use it due to personal reason. Case in point the Blood Angels love close combat to the point their first company actually prefers jetpacks and all assault rather than terminator armor.

There are other chapters that could outfit their entire first company in terminator armor and there are some who have at various points. The deathwing is unique because of stuff like plasma cannons, medics, deathwing knights, and their secret special mission.

Which is all to say why different chapters work with this sort of game. The bloodangels could do all first company in terminator armor if they wanted to, they'd probably just end up all assault terminators though.

All Dark Angels used to be black. And if you want to build a 30k army, they still are back then https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-GB/The-Horus-Heresy?Nu=product.repositoryId&N=102581+4294965544&qty=8&sorting=rec&view=table&categoryId=cat2210033

Not focusing only on the Deathwing, but Trials of Azrael is an audio drama from Black Library. It has the Dark Angels, Grey Knights, and Kharn...what more could you ask for.

I've probably listened to it 100 times.

I recommend the Legacy of Caliban Series (3 books). Particularly, Master of Sanctity.

Mild spoilers ahead:

Of the characters in the book who join the Deathwing, I found it interesting that for the first time ever (that I am aware of at least), we get an account of the training that new Deathwing members go through as they learn to maneuver and fight in their tactical dreadnought armor.

Everything from the HUD displays to to the process of getting into the suit is described. I recall that one character really had to get his head around the notion of working with momentum and how something as simple as running isn't an act that you simply do on a dime; rather, you sort of build movement up to it and then hit your stride. (This, incidently, turns you into an effective ramming weapon !)

It also gave the book a bit of humour when one poor new Deathwing member was humbled as he forgot to account for the weight of his new armor and simply fell through a staircase that collapsed under his bulky mass. Poor guy had to wait for a crane to come get him out while his squadmates laughed and teased him. The three books in the series are one big story though so I recommend the series. Belial is pretty hardcore at times in this one too - that guy does NOT mess around. I had no idea he tatoos himself with poison acid every time he perceives himself to fail at something... even if it's simply missing a shot at a target (that's some major repentence due right there). :dark_angels:.

Sorry to necro this old thread, but now that people have played the game and time has passed, are there any recommendations for books similar to the game? Preferably ones involving Space Marines killing thousands of Genestealers?

Extra points if the setting is the same (derelict ships)!
