[Lore] Do marines' arms get chopped off to fit in Terminator armour?
So, just to pass the boredom of the wait...

I have collected WH40K models but no really been much into the books... (The Terminator miniatures' design is awesomely cool!) But can't help but notice the arms of a Terminator are about at the level of his ears, they are also of course interchangeable. On the other hand the cuirass (chest piece) only has enough girth to fit maybe a pair of small T-Rex arms.

This looks anatomically worrying and I've always suspected that there is some sort of "This is the last suit you will wear" thing going on. I wouldn't put it past the Imperium of Man to design the suits to be a kind of waking coffin. Except... that's exactly what Dreadnoughts are, and marines are supposed to be able to change down to Power Armour (which is slightly more anatomically sane). Also I hear lore bits about stealing somebody's Terminator armour to make their getaway.

What the heck then? Can someone explain? ;)

You are mistaking the position of the arms to the position of the massive mass reactive shoulder pads if you look at the art you will notice that the arms are in the correct place but the pads and the raised almost "hunched" hulking look of the powerpack makes it look like they are not. ... the arm join itself is level with the very bottom of the sholder pad... not in the middle like you think it should do.

space marines are trained in the use of terminator armor which eludes to the conclusion that the suits can be fitted and removed without too much trouble, it's not like a dreadnought where the marine has died or been massively injured as a prerequisite to "fitting" inside one

Actually most are not trained in it, majority of chapters only give it out to the first company, the elites, and possibly chaplins/librarians. The only chapter i know of out of the gate that gives it to everyone is the Grey Knights.

Well. no they are kind of hunched in the armor, relying on it to support them it becomes more apparent when they are running. as for the shoulders yeah they are out of the way.

the thickness of the astartes chest is actually about twice as wide as a humans so that gives them that.

Oh ♥♥♥♥, you are right. They still look dislocated, and not sure they pivot around the correct point (at least the Lysaner mini, I remember from years ago, did not) - but I see now the bulk of the shoulder armour is way above the shoulder joint ...perhaps they were extra worried about airstrikes. :)

BTW, let me share this piece of fan art, I just found, with you:

...and comment:
1) how fantastically awesome it looks! Especially the way the armour looks as old as an Egyptian tomb, and this guy's face looks as old as the armour. It feels... kind of religious. (I would hang it in a cathedral.)
2) the painter must've been someone classically trained because the shoulders are in a more anatomically convenient position (body leaning slightly forward, but shoulders not being twisted out). It still looks very much menacing but it's definitely a reinvention of the GW Terminator shape - i.e. what you would do if you were to, say, film it.

(Also 3) the autocannon is lifted off an A-10 Warthog, but eh, I forgive him ;)

Movement is handled by the black carapace, basically the marine gets plugged into their armour, and the carapace feeds your phsical input into the reacting terminator exoskeleton.

Fluff wise, the newer armours are more primative due to entrophy of knowledge and consquently more cumbersome to use, but no less fantastic in its ability to protect the wearer.

Take a peek of the fluff, also see the evolution of the armour through development of 40K and in universe.

Personally think the Cataphractii Armour was the coolest.

You people are so wrong. Every child knows that Terminator armors are actually remote controlled robots steered by japanese teenagers...... ;)

I think this picture was in the recent Space Hulk boardgame manual if I am not mistaken.
