Picking stuff up

So at the very start, when you encounter your first deadie, he's got some sorta glowing staff sticking out his hand. Am I supposed to be able to pick it up?

Actually, yes. Just went back that way, and you are! Apperently only after triggering something.

Press the E button ... [Note if you have not found the rest of squad first not sure if you can pick up first ?] Picking item up opens a relic list on map screen 'M' clickable with your mouse.. it lists all the major relics that you can find in the single player campaign .. Single player is the real meat and potatoes of this Game imho :)
