The easiest way to achieve that is to gather combs from the other prisoner's desks, make them into shivs by using the comb on the wall, and then giving them to the guy who has the job you want. All other desks besides your own are refreshed each time you sleep with a comb, toothpaste, toilet paper, and soap so those items are infinitely refreshable so long as you sleep and save before 6 AM after which you just lie down and rest until morning roll call without saving.
Do make sure that you have enough INT to take the job you want before the work time finishes so that you can apply instantly, the lower on the list it is the higher INT you need with the Metalshop requiring 70 INT to apply. You don't have to maintain the INT to keep the job but 60-70 INT is needed to craft some of the more useful items, plastic keys being the primary, so having high INT is generally a good idea anyway.
You also need to have low heat or they will tell you to screw off but that's easy enough by finding a guard, punching him, and then letting him knock you out. When you are knocked out and wake up in the infirmary, your heat always drops to zero instantly.
