In FTP games (tf2, warframe. etc) you get drop cards for every $10 you spend ingame. (in the store)
trading cards can be crafted into badges for xp, emoticons, backrounds + steam store discounts.
for example, i got a escapists emoticon and a escapists backround plus a discount for postal 2
I find the best way is to sell cards you don't want for a reasonable price that someone will pay for, and use that money to pay for the cards you do want. You could of course shell out with your own money if you're desperate, but that wouldn't be as interesting or free.
Steam's card system is designed to force you to spend money - You'll usually only get half of the number of cards needed for a full set (And that's if you don't get duplicates)
They talk about boosters, but you're going to see one or less of these every quarter - so very limited.
Basically your options are to trade with friends and random people who actually agree to 1:1 trades OR start buying cards for .10c a piece (usually) on the market. Or of course go full idiot and start trading 2:1 and ruining your chances of cards for other games in the long run.
Conclusion: So what do you actually get out of this system aside from a broken wallet? Bigger "Steam levels" e-peen and some useless emoticons in chat that nobody else can understand or duplicate unless you both happen to have crafted the same badges.
