What is the point of guard uniform

I got myself guard uniform and pink key and was hoping to escape from prison with that, but apparently it does not work (white key is blocking me). So I tried to dig outside in front of the fence wearing guard uniform but snipers still shoot me. So what is the point of the uniform?

The guard outfit doesn't automatically unlock the white door for you. As for digging, make sure you're doing it at night. The tower guards will still shoot you while you're wearing a guard outfit, if you commit a crime.

You use the guard outfit so that when you're escaping during the middle of the night, you can actually walk near a guard without being busted. I bring one on every single escape of mine.

Can you unlock the white door at all?

No the white key has not been invented yet. The only way is taking out three guards then you will go into lockdown and the warden will send a letter saying "Ok (Playername) you've made your point I'll unlock the front door as you've requested and the white door will unlock.

why do people think if they have the guard uniform on the can cut through the fence or dig a hole. Im pretty sure a guard wouldnt have the need to dig or cut through the fence in the first place

AFAIK you need to beat the 3 specific guard that always appear in your rollcall, or maybe half number of guards appear in the guard list, and why did the guard still sniping you when you're on the roof or outside the building when you wear the guard outfit, is it a bug?

if i were a tower guard i would find it pretty unusual to see one of my collegues trying to dig under the fence, i would think he has either lost his mind or he is actually a prisoner.

Also, you don't need a guard's uniform at night when you're digging unless you aren't stealthy.

a more "legally" acquirable variant is the infirmary uniform. just nick a uniform from a knocked out inmate, and a tub of bleach (you can find the bleach easily if the map has a janitor job). both items can be stashed as non contraband until you actually need it, then simply craft together.
