A few tips for escaping San Pancho [SPOILERS! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!]
Hiyya.

First off, if you didn't read the title, then this post contains SPOILERS! You have been warned.

Moving on...

In San Pancho, my personal favourite way to escape is to dig a tunnel directly to the left. It has to be long, though, and if you dig up too early (like I did! And I lost my multitool! Grrr!), then you'll be blown into little human bits by a landmine. So, be sure to make it to the VERY edge of the map, dig up, then walk to the left! Easy as that!

Tip #1: Pick the right time! If you're digging a tunnel, make sure you do it during non-free periods (such as meal time, shower time, etc) when all of the inmates are elsewhere. During free periods, just work out and read books. Believe me, you'll need it!

Tip #2: Be where you're supposed to be... for a bit! If you're going to work on something (like a tunnel) during the non-free periods (like meal time), make sure that a guard sees you in the area that you're supposed to be in! It goes like this - You walk into the canteen, a guard sees you there, you walk out, and continue digging your tunnel. Why? Because if a guard doesn't ever see you in the area you're supposed to be in, then you'll get loads of extra heat. However, if a guard sees you walking out of the area, you'll get 10% heat, as opposed to the insta-99% (citation needed) you get from not showing up at all.

Tip #3: Use your tools! I know this sounds stupid. However, if you make a shovel, upgrade it right away, and upgrade it again, you've just lost about 4 tiles that you could've dug otherwise! This is just to make sure that you are using your tools at top efficiency. Also, don't ever break your tools, just use them until they're on their last use, and then upgrade them.

Tip #4: Get all of the wood you can get! I can not tell you how important timber is. It sucks to realize that you've run out of timber (and as such, no timber braces) when you're so close to getting to the edge of the map!

That's all. If you have a tip that you feel like I've left out, let me know! I'm no pro by any means, but hey! I'd like to have feedback!

(P.S. If you see anything that could be considered offensive, please tell me!)

This is what I hate about this map. There is no way to escape other than digging one long, boring tunnel all the way to the edge of the map. And yes, pun definitely intended.

That's the problem. You can't plan your way through those. The minefield has NO paths through it. From what I've seen, there are one block gaps between the explosion radius of each mine, but that still means that one tiny step outside your path, and you'll be blown up. This is exsctly why I hate San Pancho.

My guy met a fiery demise after he stepped out of his tunnel, only to find that he was 2 tiles away from a ticking landmine. The bits and pieces of his body had to be cleaned up by the bomb squad, then re-constructed and re-animated to make a copy of him. His multitool and sturdy pickaxe have yet to be recovered.

In other terms, I dug up and exploded because a landmine was 2 tiles away. I lost my darn multitool, alongside my sturdy pickaxe. Really sucks to have something like that go *pop*. xD

That sux dude...
If you don't know about this trick don't read.
A lot of people use this strategy I nickname the "Checkpoint Trick"
If you get useful items and such from a desk or bought it off someone, and you CAN escape, DON'T.
that way you still have your items when you load from last save. Once you have all the items you need to escape ANY prison, wait till the next day to escape or else, say you have a sturdy pickaxe and you lose it, it's gone FOREVER. (unless you already had the items to make it and all you needed was more brain smarts)
you need about 6 or 7 timber braces or more.

How do we know that we don't know about this trick if we don't read it?

You can get free timber if you go to the shack just to the upper left corner of the prison...

Just dig to the wall and then dig up. Listen for the jeep to go by first tho. I'm pretty sure the mines have a huge radius on the surface, like 3 or 5, but underground it's only if you step on them. Make a multitool or sturdy pick. Try to get tailor because that is the fastest way to make a tunnel. go into the utility tunnel and dig to the wall and stuff.

Sheet ropes man, sheet ropes! turn off generator on the rope, then you use it to get down and cut the fence. Use the Fake fence or just run then.

Another Idea:

Just wait until something like Free Peiord (skip unimportant peirods) then with your 89%+ Heat get shot then continue digging. IF YOU HAVE LESS THEN 89% HEAT DO NOT WANT TO GET SHOT. The snipers will not shoot you so you can continue.
