Watchtowers can see me at night?

So I already have the Staff key and Entrance key. When i try to sneak out at night wearing a guard outfit (during evening rollcall), the watchtowers around the prison started shooting at me. How do the watchtowers work? Why were they able to recognize me as a prisoner, while I was wearing a guard outfit at night? Please help.
