Map Editor Questions
There's been some mention of a Prison Editor, later down the road. As I play little questions pop in my head, like, "Ooh I wonder if I'll be able to change THAT when it comes out." Was just wondering if there were planned limits, and how extensive it's going to be. For example

  • Will we be able to choose what guards say, or given a selection of High Security, Med Security, and Low Security?
  • While making the daily routine, will we have to use presets, or will we be able to create our own shifts (i.e be at [x,y] for 2 hours)
  • While making our prison, will we have to use the only escape methods available in stock prisons, or will Modability come with it, letting us make our own methods.
  • Will we be able to select the players default job?
  • Will there be steam workshop?
  • When?
  • Will there be tilesets exclusive to the Prison Editor, or will they all be from stock prisons, or, would we be able to make/download our own?

I'm sure the devs can't answer most of these questions at this juncture, since it doesn't even exsist yet, but I'd like to know just how in depth and customizable the prisons will be. Thanks for your time, it's appreciated.

The map editor does exist, it's what I'm using to create the game maps. It's just not user friendly at all at the moment, I'll deal with that later on before it gets public release.

Will we be able to choose what guards say, or given a selection of High Security, Med Security, and Low Security?
You'll be able to pick the map routine out of low sec, med, high, and camp based. This affects a variety of things such as job quotas and pay, things guards say etc.

While making the daily routine, will we have to use presets, or will we be able to create our own shifts (i.e be at [x,y] for 2 hours)
They're preset when you pick the map routine

While making our prison, will we have to use the only escape methods available in stock prisons, or will Modability come with it, letting us make our own methods.
Just the ingame one's I'm afraid. But the way you setup the maps will define how difficult certain escapes are

Will we be able to select the players default job?
You'll be able to decide which jobs that prison contains as well as the default one yeah.

Will there be steam workshop?
Guess so, not sure on how that all works

When?
Nearer the end of early access

Won't be too hard to add your own, as long as you keep the structure intact.

Some more questions about the editor

Will we be able to make as many floors as we like? (basement also)

Can we define wheter there will be rocks or not underground or are they ramdomly placed or even default placed?

Can the searchlight during the night be manipulated too? (quantity, path, radius)

The walls on the editor will show which can be climbed using the hook and which can't?

that's all for now, you guys are doing a great work, keep it coming

- No Heat

- Max. Strength
- Max. Intellect
- Max. Speed

I hope you realize that nobody can ban you from anything for using a memory editor on a single player game. Your cheats are not illegal, are not hacks, are not trainers, they're just you reaching into the memory of your own machine and changing the values that are stored in it.

I use cheat engine, extensively. You really can't make a program not work with Cheat Engine. You need to allocate variables such as speed, strength and health to a place in memory, and the Cheat Engine will be able to access your memory and find those variables no matter what. Every game, application and service must do this in some way.

If you do this in an online game, then you may be banned, but this is a single player game. It's YOUR game, YOUR memory, YOUR variables. You cannot be banned from anything for editing them.

._. you want a single line of code that prevents clientside variable altering? Can I get you a side of pigs flying with that?
Hackie P4ckie Nov 29, 2014 @ 10:43am
Honestly Skull, it's more trouble than it's worth.

To reset every variable would be an extra truckload of work just to stop people editing their games is too much. To do such a thing, you literally need to add a condition to every variable in the game that resets it to a certain value if it goes too high. It's already been done for health in The Escapists. If you try to raise your health while your strength is too low, your health will just reset itself manually.

To prevent cheating would have an impact performance-wise, and would also reduce how easy it is to make changes on the developers side later on. The big budget games like Dishonored and Fallout, COD and such, could not even prevent cheating with things like Cheat Engine. I doubt Chris can solve that problem.

I wouldn't even consider it a problem at all, and I'm sure you agree based on what you said before. If you think cheating will make the game less fun, don't do it. It's not multiplayer; other people cheating won't ruin it for you at all. All preventing cheating would do here is make the game less fun for those people who do want to cheat, and that would benefit no one.

If people want to edit values clientside that's their decision, but obviously I don't want glitched data files being sent to the leaderboards, which is something I'd have to address.

Will we be able to choose what guards say
One better, you'll be able to edit the speech file for the game.

Well, coming from someone who has edited variables, I can say that I was left with suprisingly low scores. Like, negative scores. Cheating has a negative impact on your score for whatever reason.

Hi Chris! Im thing you decline this, but this dosn't waste much time. If you could, can you send me the map editor. I love to test the editor and I love test new things. Im young young young coder from Finland. Code languages/programs I been used: GameMaker: Studio (Standard), Java, HTML5, JavaScript, C++, Visual Basic and more. I want develop TheEscapists, but I think i can't, so I'd like to even test the editor... Please

I think he means a buggy, hard-to-use map editor is better than none at all, especially if it will be fixed eventually. Release it now; it's not like you can't still release the better version later.
