Do you need a special tool or what
You cannot dig up into the wall. You need to break the wall first. It can be done. I've done it. But you need to put a poster over the hole/wall when you're not using it or the guards will find it. It might be easier to dig to the point where you want inside the woodshop, then dig down from inside the woodshop itself.
Here's how I did it:

Just replay the tutorial. If i remember correctly, it's one of the last steps to complete it.
It reads "Dig Up 0%". I cannot get any other dig up dialog, no matter where I move my character or hover my cursor.
I am having the same issue. While the shovel is selected, I move my character and the cursor around, and get only "Dig Up 0%". This is just frustrating and very poorly designed.
EDIT: I finally got out by just randomly clicking and moving around. Very poorly designed!!
