If it is not allowed, why is the server in the steam library? Also, I'm quite sure I had it installed before.
I have no interest in renting a server.
It should most definitely not come from dedicated servers.
The PC servers are ridiculously overpriced, for a game with mixed reviews and a dwindling player-base. Non-player hosted servers is the dumbest marketing solution I have ever seen.
While the game is robust and has a substantial amount of offer; having peer to peer sharegame is not a replacement for true multiplayer solutions. They have done this so that they can enforce players paying for maps / region unlocks. Since the option to grind to unlock a region is already there- it makes zero sense to lock out self-hosted servers. With all the traveling you have to do between regions to get the materials you need- you and your friends have to get on each of their own ships (because they cant travel with you) and warp to another region of play (AFTER) the previous non-host launches the first expedition into that map. If the host leaves first, it kicks everyone rather than migrating to another player who may have wanted to stay on their "home" island to continue play until another player returns.
Pay walling multiplayer is ridiculous.
What a pitty. I was going to give this game a wonderful review until I learned about this.
