Easiest way to remove tree stumps

I just started playing again recently after a long break, there seems to have been a change in how difficult it is to remove tree stumps. It used to only take a few hits; now each one takes a really long time, and you can't use the saw on them. Is the hammer a better tool for removing stumps, or maybe the demolition hammer? I've only just reached iron tier, so no drills or chainsaws available.

Very shortly the new update will allow you to use any pickaxe to dig out tree stumps easily so hold tight! Currently the best method is using explosives or cannons but they can leave holes in the ground afterwards so it's usually a good idea to only have tree farms in an unimportant area or map so it doesn't effect your base because of this.

I have spent my time on one island flattening the land to different heights, building structures and chopping and replanting plants and trees. Looking forward to a easier way to remove the stumps as i would say at least 600 maybe 800 tress of various types went chop chop and stumps cleared lol. So what i did was replant touching each other so i could hit multiple stumps at once to save swinging time lol.
