In my latest game, I put the stone chest next to my furnace, kiln & forge. This is usually enough to store all my ore, coal, clay, copper etc, and the ingots it creates.
I also have another few chests for bits of random items, but the stone chests are pretty cheap to build once you have the chisel, so it is fairly easy to have a few next to relevant workstations. Stone Chunks are also easy to get either on the ground, or mining in the mountains.
they have 18 slots(max), take up a very small footprint, can be sunk into the ground so almost nothing shows(and you can walk on them), and if you dont sink them you can display many items/books on most of them.
they are most ideal on ships.
yup.......no brainer.
Signs become available once you are able to use a saw.
While the Stone Chest hold the most items with 18 slots, I'd rather use my stone chunks to make stone structures. But if you don't mind the grind to get the chunks, go for it.
In the crafting window, make use of the various tabs. For example, in the building material tab, everything is sorted by material at first with the items you've created at the top of the list. Use the search feature to quickly locate things
