You need a saw.
A hammer.
Nails.
Then you will have more wood open up. Like proper roofs, floors, doors.
Meanwhile you can Davy Crocket Logs to a cabin.
Build with Bamboo ( the easiest to work with.. as all you need is the Bamboo ) But if no tropical Yland.. well.. Davy Crocket didnt do so bad.
Wood is a bit at this point, ridiculous to work with. You need a blacksmith level station just to make freaking doors. Plus the tools to make simple things like floors and slat panel walls.. 'cause you need the saw.
If you want to get creative, you could use stone blocks or brick on the bottom two or three layers, then beams on top of that. Don't forget a floor.
Note that some homes you see in the game belong to people hosting the server. They built in the editor and did not have to scrounge for materials like you do as you are visiting their server - Multiplayer.
It is possible to build without the saw but you might not have doors/windows. I build that way all the time cause to lazy to learn how to use a furnace yet (need only axe low level). Wood logs are easiest to nature build. Bamboo comes in close second but you need the tropic area. Have not played snow/desert yet so donno what works there.
