Is crafting weapons and items worth doing to make money?
like in runescape? Or is there better ways to get money and better equipment?

crafting to sell gear to other players in not worth it, as most players just craft for other people for free.

As far as I can see, skilling to make money isn't really worth it at the begining levels. It might be worth it at higher levels and you might be able to charge for you to craft items for people, but other than that, doing dungeons and killing stuff is generally more profitable. Even at lower levels, dungeons are a really nice way to make money.

Quests for some money and lots of xp, and dungeons for some xp and lots of money.

Skills can make you money people buy resources and potions from players but the stuff you actually craft people don't buy any of that normally.
You can make money on skills when you have a high enough level and a player needs to craft his helm for set but doesn't have the required level. They trade you the stuff and then people usually "Tip" the player for kindness(your gold income would be low but it all helps).

At later levels you can sell pieces of gear for like 28s a pop, at level 20 2g a pop. So don't worry about money and just have a good time. If you particularly need money for a skill or something, just quest around for a bit.
i think you just have to really look how much everything costs to make the gear or weapon and see how much its worth once your done.

To be honest I make all of my gold from just going out to the wild and forage/mine/forest basic resources and sell them. That way is 100% profit and you need to do this anyways to raise the skills so it is win win. I do not ever spend money unless I need to craft something for myself.
