Oh Im sorry I didnt know that the only dark areas in the entire game are caves. Maybe I should just turn the contrast ALL the way up. Obviously I am confused and playing the game the wrong way.
Mostly, though, I've adjusted my settings for brightness and contrast and all that, and don't seem to have a problem wandering around at night or in deep, shadowed valleys. The most irksome thing I've encountered (regarding the light available) is when looking up and down; it you catch too much sky, the ground darkens too much.
