Amita or Sabal?
I just got to the first Balance of Power mission, and I'm not entirely sure who I want to help. Both have convincing reasons for their views, and even though I know I can hop back and forth as the game progresses, I was wondering if it makes more sense to pick one or the other all the way through. How much does it affect the game if you side strictly with one of them rather than bouncing between the two? Do missions change that much? Rewards or story any different?

I don't know, and I'm not going to check back to this thread for replies since I don't want to accidentally read any spoilers anyone might post, but the game hints do tell you that your decisions lead to different missions. Whether that means a different outcome or not, I have no idea.

As for myself, I'm doing what I personally think is 'right' each time, and after I finish the game I'm gonna replay it and do the opposite each time...

Amita seems to be the lesser of the evils and tends to think more objectively thus her decisions are more tactically sound. Although at times her moral empathy seems to be lacking. The fact that they can't work together in the time of crisis speaks ill of them both as they should be working together and not working against each other. They are after all supposed to lead by example and if they continue fighting with each other it effects the moral of their soldiers/rebels.

The info did save lives...

there is no warm fuzzy feeling afterwards, it seems you end up feeling dirty no matter which side you choose.

Yea, but she does not know wether the info will save more lives or not, for all we know it could just be info for a supply run or where they are stashing things. it just turned out that some info saved lives. Where as Saabal would rather save lives rather then sacrifice them for info that may or may not save other lives. But whatever lol guess we can interpret however we want.

From what i've seen thus far, Amita wants to 'uplift' or 'modernize' Kyrat, abolish/modify it's traditions and generally make it a more healthy place minus the opium dens

Sabal wants to maintain the status quo (Minus the random executions and more-or-less psychotic leadership) as well as support religious and cultural practices that Amita (and likely others in Kyrat) consider extreme.

Personally? I went with Amita. While it IS true you lost men (a whopping 9 soldiers, ooh) at the first choice point, (spoiler) The intelligence saves an entire temple full of civilians, an arms cache and religious sites in the following mission however. Amita's goals all seem to focus on long term. Even Amita admits she isn't proud of 1-2 of the things she requests, but they're (I would imagine) temporary boosters. A way to get education and healthcare (as well as food) purchased for the people (her own examples in fact).

While I admit to wanting to try Sabal's side of it all, I'm going to finish the game with her first and see things from her perspective.

Tacticly, intelligence always makes more sence; when playing I did get the feeling that it was important intel and not something random. If you want to bring morals into it, men died for the intelligence, so are their lives not wasted if you don't save it? I also did what I thought was moraly right, I sided with her for the intel and Sabal for the rest... Im not done, so I have not idea how it will turn out, lol, I just got to the north east area of the map.

Unless you listen to Min, then shoot his chopper down...or not (he's leaving you in control anyway). Even if you help Sab or Am take over, you can promptly blow them away and consider the country truly free.

At the end her true face shows when you go to Tirtha.

Amita pulls the sexist card the moment anyone disagrees with her, so its automatically Sabal for me.

Amita's like a militant version of Anita Sarkeesian. ♥♥♥♥ that ♥♥♥♥♥.
