Pagan Min : NOT The Villain
Pagan Min is definitely not the antagonist in Far Cry 4. Surprised?

And no, it's not Ajay either, despite the sociopathic nonchalance with which he fertilizes the potter's fields of Kyrat throughout the whole affair.

No friends, I have discovered the story's true nemesis. His name?

Rabi "Ray" Rana.

Truly, in the storried annals of human history, no character has ever been so thoroughly deserving of our ire and contempt. Seriously. Where is the off-button on this spray-tanned crouton? His voice is like ear-sandpaper. His comedy bits gave me hypertension. It's like flying transcontinental with Gilbert Gottfried.

Each time I spend ten consecutive seconds in a closed-cab vehicle, listening to one of his three-odd speeches for the sixty-fifth time, I want to bail out, strap the chassis down with high-explosives and yak dung, and wheel it into whatever po-dunk lean-to that aural equivalent of a root-canal is occupying.

In all seriousness, aside from Ajay's inability to walk a hundred paces in any direction without being mauled by five kinds of fauna, Rabi Ray is my most egregious complaint about Far Cry 4. If someone ever mods him out of existence altogether, traversing Kyrat by car would become an absolute pleasure.

And drown that cardboard box for good measure,

Eloquently said, dear Sir. Kudos!

.........You can turn off the radio? This... changes everything...

Yeah, Rabi Ray is pretty damn annoying. I can sort of see what they were going for when they came up with the character, but it just falls flat. That "radio-off" button is a godsend, really. Shame you can't avoid his mission conversations if you want to 100% the game.

Pagan Min was never the bad guy in my eyes. He's the ruler of a country, a hard enough job and that is why most rulers are bad ones, but he falls in love and has a daughter. Then the leader of the terrorist group attacking his government kills his infant daughter. A baby. How would you feel? Yeah. And he is nothing but friendly to Ajay in the beginning and gives no reason to run, I mean seriously the guy is just dealing with terrorists that killed his daughter years ago and still linger so why run away? FYI the first thing I did was wait with the Crab Rangoon for a bit until Pagan came back. Opens your eyes to the context of the game how there are no good guys, a theme in FC2 (all soldiers/mercs = cancer) and FC3 (jungle warriors you fight for are raging psychos) and in reality if I was walking around judging I would say Mohan is a terrible person and with the endings for the female leader making children into child soldiers etc. I say Golden Path are worse than Pagan Min.

Oh yeah, Golden Path = Ultimate Evil. Pagan Min is a psychopath. Not sure how he can be "the good guy", but okay. I mean, he stabs someone in the neck with his pen at the beginning...repeatedly...no way he can be a "good guy". Likable bad guy..? I'll give you that, but "good guy"? Not a chance.

An interesting take.

Though the industry is gingerly tip-toeing into more mature territories, as a storytelling medium, AAA games in particular neglect the opportunity to create evocative dramas, playing it safe with the formulaic black 'n white tropes of summer blockbusters. Which goes a long way towards justifying why your character racks up a bigger bodycount than heart disease.

Not that I mind, per se. Playing as The Hero or The Outlaw is good fun, but I tend to really dig departures into other areas. ...The fact that no great examples spring to mind is somewhat disappointing.

In the mean time, I value solid mechanics and good programming over story anyhow. I think FC4 is among the genre leaders in this regard.

You might like Spec Ops: The Line then. No clear cut winner, there.

Boooo.. Story, every time. (Ok, most of the time. Ok, depends on how good the gameplay is. Ok, FC4 was pretty damn good.) :-D

I'm just a very picky consumer when it comes to fiction. If it's not of sufficient complexity or depth, it's kind of background noise, yanno? Like the difference between Academy Award caliber films versus summer popcorn flicks; there's an overabundance of popcorn games. IMO there are precious few examples of superb storytelling in games, but the industry is slowly lumbering in that direction. Meanwhile, there are some fun rides to enjoy. :)

Well that soldier almost killed his ex-stepson with an AK and that would have lost the ashes of his beloved, er, ex-GF/ex wife not sure if Pagan was married to Ajay's mom or not, likely not, anyway yeah those ashes are probably worth stabbing a guy with a pen over for sure, not to mention the reasons of incompetence and negligence. That kind of loss Pagan had with the baby would likely make most guys unstable.
R5CYA Mar 25, 2015 @ 10:24pm
ex-stepson? ex-gf/ex wife? starting to sound like a soap opera now! so don't worry, they'll all be back in the next episode!
Mr. No One Mar 25, 2015 @ 11:07pm
Amita wants to blow up sacred temples and sell drugs. Sabal is a stiff prude who will oppress women and shun change or growth for kyrat.
MattStriker Mar 26, 2015 @ 2:47am
Both of them count as "lesser evil" compared to Pagan and his bunch. That's pretty much the game's theme. The Golden Path aren't exactly saints and their leaders are pretty much beyond salvage (thank Kyra for the opportunity to correct your earlier mistake in choosing one of them during the epilogue...), but Pagan is so much worse that even they are pretty clearly a step up.

Where in the hell is the button to turn off the radio?
