Though the industry is gingerly tip-toeing into more mature territories, as a storytelling medium, AAA games in particular neglect the opportunity to create evocative dramas, playing it safe with the formulaic black 'n white tropes of summer blockbusters. Which goes a long way towards justifying why your character racks up a bigger bodycount than heart disease.
Not that I mind, per se. Playing as The Hero or The Outlaw is good fun, but I tend to really dig departures into other areas. ...The fact that no great examples spring to mind is somewhat disappointing.
In the mean time, I value solid mechanics and good programming over story anyhow. I think FC4 is among the genre leaders in this regard.
Boooo.. Story, every time. (Ok, most of the time. Ok, depends on how good the gameplay is. Ok, FC4 was pretty damn good.) :-D
