Game shadows too dark!

I cant see ANYTHING thats in a shadow, because its too dark. I really have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I thought it was like that as default, but I checked out some videos and they were all much brighter. If anyone knows how to fix this, please tell me because I restarted the game about 3 times just because I couldnt see the rope in the tutorial. (Also, I tried turning down my contrast and upping my brightness/gamma but none of these worked)
