[Solved]Far Cry 4 crashes on startup.

Edit: Problem fixed by setting windows 7 compatibility mode on the farcry 4 exe file. Thanks to all that helped.

I own the game on uplay, not on steam. My PC specs are in my account page but I will copy paste them here too.

GPU: Asus GTX 980 STRIX
CPU: Intel i5 4570
Power Supply: Corsair CX 600W
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-H81.Amp-UP
Case: Cooler Master HAF 922
Memory: G.Skill 8GB Ripjaws
Hard Drive: WD Blue 1TB

Now when I click to open it, it will launch the FARCRY 4 logo with a black background, and then say Far Cry 4 has stopped working with a windows popup.

On occasion it will also sometimes start to launch the game, have the black screen with the loading bar at the bottom, and spinning icon on the bottom right, then it will crash.


I would really like to play this game, I've launched it before like a year ago when it came out (I was on a 770 at that point, just launched and worked fine). I since uninstalled it, and re-installed it today to try and play but it is of course not working.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

right click and select properties on your FarCry 4 .exe file in the games bin folder
you can set a compatability mode for windows 7 if your using windows 10

you can also set the games .exe to run as administrator there too

tried setting both uplay, then the games exe as admin as well. will try out win7 compat mode

yea it was never a problem before..... i'll add it to the tips section

i never had to set it here on either of my Win 10 installs anyway ..but both were Clean Installations of Windows 10 not an upgrade ..so maybe thats the difference ?

when i first did the upgrade to 10 Microsft installed all the wrong freaking drivers on my desktop as well as my laptop ..so after the upgrade i wiped em and did a clean install.

it put in the worst drivers for my Nvidis card i ever used , plus screwed up the driver for my lan chip (it would not connect at the right speeds ) , and on my laptop it installed some BS microsoft drivers for my sound video as well as my wireless chip and lan chip

so i always tell my customers after they do a win 10 upgrade check all your drivers and software or wipe and do a clean install of the os after you have activated it

Try launch the game with uplay in offline mode not online.

i just did an upgrade, and i use geforce experience as well for shadowplay, gamestream, ect. so that can auto update my drivers. thanks for your help :)

not sure, try going through all the tips pinned to this discussion. the win7 compat did it for me. seems like its a different issue for everyone

Yeah, I've been going thru them trying again, will keep it up for a bit. The game won't even start now for me. The splash screen comes up, then I get the message that this program has stopped working...

Tried Vista, Vista sp1, Vista sp2, Win 7 and Win 8 compatability with no luck, Steam and Uplay are always running as Admin, tried the game as admin also. Way back when there used to be a problem with EVGA Precision, but they fixed that issue a long time ago, but I may try disabling that again to see if that old bug popped back up again.
