Gaming so far has been good to those on a budget. Intel’s Pentium G3220 and the Pentium G3258 Anniversary editions provided light on the pocket solutions for many gamers out there. But according to several reddit posts, these days might be coming to an end – sooner than later. Ubisoft’s Far Cry 4 does not run on straight dual core PCs and ends up displaying a black screen and a failure to launch bug. In all fairness, Far Cry 4 does have the Intel Core i5-750 or AMD’s Phenom II X4 955 listed in its minimum requirements section

For a while now the dual-core Pentium processors have been a great option for budget gaming, with the Pentium G3220 and newer G3258 Anniversary Edition taking center stage in a number of budget gaming builds. Today, we may be nearing the end of the road for dual-core CPUs entirely as a couple of high-profile games now require a quad-core CPU.
Far Cry 4 won't even open with a dual-core CPU installed, and while the game will load when using dual-core CPU's with hyper-threading enabled (for 4 total "cores") the performance isn't very good. PC World's article points to users "reporting that Far Cry 4 flat-out refuses to work with 'straight' dual-core PCs - chips that don’t use hyperthreading to 'fake' having additional cores." The article references a "black-screen 'failure to launch' bug" being reported by users with these dual-core chips.
Many of the games main assets run off CPU core or thread 3
if you have a dual core CPU there is no core or thread #3 for to load the game on = black screen
core #4 comes into play when you open the map edit program and it takes a decent CPU to run
cores or threads number 1 and 2 are also in use for both the main game as well as the map edit program
the Minimum system requirements are posted on the Steam Store page before you buy the game , you should read them and make sure your PC meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements on any software before you buy or install it ,, for years (decades actually ) this information has also been available on the outside packaging of every piece of software that you buy in a retail store
if you failed to read or understand it ... seek a refund from Steam , they may or may not be able to help you
please see
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=6695-QIKM-7966&l=english
most retail outlets do not offer refunds on software.. all sales are Final ......(again that has been that way for DECADES )
they are not gonna re-code an entire software title because you were foolish enough to not read or skip the minimum system requirements
and that your PC can not handle the game because it falls below the minimum system requirements
if you have a Dual core CPU you will have to Upgrade it to play Far Cry 4
its 2016 for gods sake ... and even an X box 1 or a PS4 both have 2 quad core modules and i would not be surprised at all , if future titles also will require at least a quad core CPU
i doubt the dev team wants to try to re code an entire engine so people can run a game on systems that have less hardware support then even a console does
and yes this games engine is HARD on your Video Card , much harder then other titles and even a Geforce 960 can not max out all the in game settings..and last i checked .. that's a $200 video card
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2015/03/23/asus_strix_gtx_960_directcu_ii_oc_video_card_review/4#.VrYc6VgrIdU
to see how hard it is, look here to see even on LOW end cards like an AMD R 7 260X or the GTX750Ti series cards struggle to run the game
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2015/...8#.Vo7NERUrIdU
and yes they are using a Quad Core Intel I7 for a CPU for these benchmarks ...
I would love to know which thread library you're programming with, because none of the ones I've used have been like that. They vary in ability, but a good userland ("green") thread implementation does several thousand threads on a single core. (The Glasgow Haskell Compiler runtime is just one example.)
Even the worst implementations (e.g., old JVM) seem to do a dozen threads on a single core without too much difficulty. So exactly what are you programming with, and how do you know that the FC4 developers' runtime system has the same issues?

i did not make this game nor program it
if i open hardware monitor i see cores 1 and 2 in use when i launch the game with core 3 with a heavy load on my intel quad core CPU
core number 4 is only heavily used when i open the map edit program
it has been reported on many sites that to run FarCry 4 yes you need a cpu with at least 4 threads .. there is a dual core fix .. yes it modifies the games main .exe file and its from the stolen hacked version of the game
and every time i mention the FACT THAT YES FAR Cry requires a quad core CPU
some one like you wants to argue .. look at the minimum supported CPU
both the Intel and AMD cpu's listed are quad core CPU's .. contact Ubisoft support if you do not belive me
i read on one site that they had trouble keeping the games engine stable on a dual core CPU with all the assests they added to this game .. so the decision was made to make a quad core a minimum system requirement
add in the fact they probably did not have one PC at thier office that had a $70 dual core CPU in it when they made the game
could they have corrected the problem with more developments time .. probably . .but
if the engine kept crashin on a dual core and moving to a quad core solved it .. yes make a quad core a minimum system requirement
quad core CPU's have been around for over half a decade and as i pointed out ..
EVEN THE X BOX ONE AND PS4 CONSOLES HAVE MORE THEN 2 CORES
contact Ubisoft here AND ASK THEM

you can also find the minimum system reqirements posted on Ubisoft blog page here .
and they posted THOSE before the game shipped
http://blog.ubi.com/far-cry-4-pc-specs/
yes FarCry 4 requires a quad core CPU as a minimum system requirement
they never made it a secret
with dual core cpu's the game will simply BLACK SCREEN and fail to load
same with Direct X 10 vid cards .. the game will black screen and not launch , even on a GTX 285
so if ya got a dual core yes .. the game will fail to launch properly on it ... as it does not have the extra cores or threads the game needs to launch properly
easy fix = meet the games minimum system requirements or install an Intel I3 that does have at least 2 extra threads ..or download and try some possibly virus filled fix ..for some that works .... for some it won't
i run the game just fine on an old overclocked core 2 quad ..but my CPU has 4 cores
\..........not 2
thats another thing FarCry 4 wont do .... so yes GTA V has lower system requirements
and used a totally different game engine as well
I'm very glad you agree that I'm right about that, then.
Yes, I do. I want you to explain, in detail, why, "if you have a dual core CPU there is no ...thread #3."
I have personally programmed threaded applications back in the 90s, when almost nobody had more than one core, I am pretty certain that the thread libraries were not incorrect when they claimed that one could run many threads on one CPU, and my multi-threaded programs certainly appeared to work.
If you stuck to just saying that FC4 required more than two cores, I'd not be arguing at all. It's your bogus explanations about *why* it requires more than two cores that I feel obliged to correct.
CPU core #3 gets the biggest load when you load the main game cores #1 and 2 are also in use ....with a lighter load .. if i open the FarCry 4 edit program CPU core #4 is heavily used
bottom line .......still is .....this game requires a quad core CPU as a minimum system requirement ..on dual core CPU's the game will simply black screen on launch
correct me all you wish to ... don't care .... it is ....what it is ..don't care as the game has run here since the day it shipped on all 3 of my systems ..as they all have a quad core CPU
But the idea that this is to do with threads, rather than cores, is simply wrong.
its dual core CPU with 2 extra threads
they are not CORES but yes this game will run on those CPU's
example of what i mean by THREADS
the intel i 3 cpu's support hyperthreading so they do act as a quad core to get Far Cry 4 to launch normally ..with slightly decreased performance vs an I 5
but they have been reported to work fine
see http://www.techspot.com/review/917-far-cry-4-benchmarks/page5.html

vs a g3258 lacks those 2 extra threads and no the game will not launch
http://ark.intel.com/products/82723/Intel-Pentium-Processor-G3258-3M-Cache-3_20-GHz
# of Cores 2
# of Threads 2 < -----------
Far Cry 4 will not launch on tha G3258 \ but will on an Intel I 3 as it supports two additional threads............now do you see what i mean ?
It offers four-way parallelism. That's a good thing, but you don't appear to understand that threads are a method of concurrency, not parallelism, and thus even one core with no SMT[1] can support hundreds, even thousands, of threads.
From the point of view of an OS, it sees a two-core, two-way SMT[1] processor exactly the way it treats a four-core processor, and in terms of the threads the OS is using, it doesn't even care; four-way, two-way, single-CPU, it will run the same threads in very much the same way.[2]
You're correct that FC4 does not run with less than four (or perhaps three) cores, but your explanation about why that is is completely wrong, because you seem to think the number of threads that can be supported on a system has something to do with how many CPUs it has, which is utterly wrong.
Stick to the facts you know, and don't make up stuff to provide explanations in areas you don't understand.
(FC4 apparently requires parallelism, not just concurrency, and therefore this is not a issue related to threading at all.)
[1]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simultaneous_multithreading
(And don't be mislead by the name, SMT is not about threading; it's about parallelism.)
[2]: I actually simplify a bit here: given a guarantee that there will be no parallel operations, an OS may well drop all its locking protocols. But that just means it can run multiple threads a little more efficiently.
if it works on an I 3 which supports 4 threads
but not on a haswell dual core or a core 2 duo
both of which only have 2 threads
the Intel i 3 Cpu's have 4 ..but they are still considered a dual core CPU
as they really only have 2 acual CPU cores
look it up man i just showed you the pages to prove it
they even benchmarked the game two days after it shipped on that tech spot page with
an Intel i 3 3220 .. i used links to the haswell version of the I3 that will work in the ops current motherboard which would be an i 3 4130 or an i 3 4160 as thats the same socket as the G3258
note also the benchmarks on the techspot article where a lower clocked intel i 5 was still a bit faster then a higher clocked i 3
# of Cores 4
# of Threads 4 <---------------------------------
and is only clocked @ 2.4 ghz in my old dell machine from 2006
its got an Intel core 2 quad Q6600 in it and yes the game launches fine even on that old machine ..no black screen
4 logical processors = threads
4 physical processors = cores
on a G3258 you'll see <----this is the only one that does not work .. hmm wonder why ?
2 logical processors = threads
2 physical processors = cores
on an Intel i 3 you'll see
4 logical processors = threads
2 physical processors = cores
in an intel i 5 750 you'll see
4 logical processors = threads
4 physical processors = cores
in an Intel i 7 you'll see
8 logical processors = threads
4 physical processors = cores
or even on some higher end model i 7's
16 logical processors = threads
8 physical processors = cores
