Those icons above an enemy's head.
I know that regular enemies have a red triangle mapped above their heads and heavies have red shields. What I find confusing is when I have to kill two commanders using a knife.
This quest I did there was someone with a yellow triangle, some with lightning bolts.
Not knowing which two were the commanders I had to kill everyone using a knife.
I did a takedown on a heavy who was using a flamer and the quest failed as he was one of the commanders.

Commanders are the ones with the yellow icons as opposed to the regular orange/red icons. you should always find a good overwatch position (Typically terrain higher than the area you are in, this way you can gain the advantage) to spot all your enemies first and then plan what to do next.

Take note that Commanders can be any of those enemies so if one shows up with a yellow shield and a yellow circle both of which indicate a heavy and a sniper and they are the commanders, then either put them aside and snipe the other enemies with the red icons or take them out first without letting the others know.

also when ya shoot at heavy's use your L shift Key to steady your aim

always go for a head shot with your sniper rifle ..one shot will Drop em

if ya need to take one down from behind get the Heavy take down skill and Sneak up on em from behind

i do not remember a single mission that you have to take out a heavy commander with a knife

i do remember a shot gun \the bees mission side quest

and an assualt rifle side mission late in the game ..not a blade

and a takedown on a heavy yes ... uses your Knife
(once you unlock the heavy takedown skill, in the skill tree )

you have to sneak up behind them and not be detected by them

what mission were you on ?

there was this one mission in the north where you need to kill these three commanders in a secured area and the only way through was by the front as everywhere else was mountainous territory and there was no real overwatch position to spot all your enemies.

Luckily i already had the AMR and Buzzsaw handy, i cut down the regular troops and left the commanders, but i had to let them calm down a little before using an AK-47 to headshoot the commanders because the objective demanded an Assault Rifle kill to each, two snipers and a heavy.

I took a hunting syringe so should have seen both commanders with yellow triangles but I saw only one.

It was one of those repetative missions that you get from someone immediately after liberating an outpost. I can't remember which one though.

use your map and tell us exactly where you are, that way it should be easier to recall what it is.

There is a full listing of the symbols and the enemy names that they are assigned to ingame. Usually accessible while using binoculars I believe.

Sniper scope, either by an additional attachment bought in the store or by signature weapon, focusing on the target for a few moments is usually enough, or the camera. Be aware the archer units only show up for a few moments with the icon as crossed arrows and disappear, they also can detect you without your detection meter going off as well as bird call noises as a form of communication.

When you can do fortresses by yourself with ease, knowing what your targets are can determine how the fight goes. the NPC's with the lightning bolt icon are just as likely to charge at you or throw Molotovs. Same with commander assassinations.
