Square of shadow around player
First, I bought this on Uplay, hence it doesn't show I own it here.

So when my Shadow settings are at any setting above medium, I get this annoying square of shadow around my player, shown here:

http://imgur.com/QTEBp7i

I also will occasionally see flickering shadows in a grid-like pattern where that shadow square usually is, and if you look closely in that screenie, you can just barely make it out. They're both related, so they're both symptoms of the same problem.

Seems like driver issues, but mine are up to date. I don't want to play with medium or low shadows, and PCSS, while it fixes the issue, causes framerate issues, even with my 1080 FTW.

Also, it seems like this game doesn't have any anisotropic filtering, I wonder if this is somehow attached to that? :S

i force anisotropic filtering to 16 X right in my Nvidia control panel

in Nvidia control panel, i made these changes
Anisotropic Filtering = 16 X
Max Pre Rendered Frames = 1
Set Power Management Mode = Adaptive < -- since i have a strix GTX 960 factory overclocked card

see if that helps ..wish i had a 1080 to test it on

but yea it could be a pascal driver issue ..since the game shipped well before pascal was out , and Nvidia broke the Nvidia gameworks stuff long ago even with Maxwell cards at the driver level ... so bad it made the game crash even on titan X cards and GTX 980ti ones

you should be fine with Ultra shadows not PCSS yea they cost a ton in FPS

i use HIGH but i only have a strix 960
also try other settings for AO and AA

posting my specs (yea you can go alot higher ..just adding them as an example )
my in Game settings are Custom
resolution 1920 X 1080
vsync - on

Quality settings
motion blur off - not a fan of it ..
Textures - Ultra
Shadows - High
Post FX -Ultra
Geometry - Very High
Vegetation- Ultra
Environment - High
Water - Ultra
Ambient Occusion setting is SSBC
Antialising settings is SMAA

God rays - off- not a fan of how it looks (can make the game unstable)
Fur - on
Trees relief -on

in Advanced settings
Triple buffering - off
Vsync mode - Normal

in Nvidia control panel, i made these changes
Anisotropic Filtering = 16 X
Max Pre Rendered Frames = 1
Set Power Management Mode = Adaptive

game looks fine to me and plays stutter free on my system with zero crashes

also i installed Razer Cortex version 7.0 as it does seem to help with this game
http://www.filehorse.com/download-game-booster/old-versions/

newer versions of cortex don't work as well

al;so of note i never install that Nvidia 3 d vision crapware with my drivers ..and thats what it looks like if i do ..even in Windows

3d vision is only useful if ya have an Nvidia GPU and the Nvidia 3d glasses and a supported 3d screen

hope some of that helps as your card should be kicking this games ass in 1440 P

Forcing through nvidia CP doesn't seem to do anything for anisotropic, but as far as the square shadow goes, it was actually TXAAx4 that was causing it. Any other setting, including TXAAx2 does not cause it, so it had nothing to do with the shadows option.

I'm playing with SMAA right now, which I honestly prefer to the other settings available in game.

I guess I'll be checking my AA setting. I always wondered what was causing that.

Look at the ground right in front of the player. You can see it's dark, and then if you look halfway up the picture, the ground is suddenly light.

Oh.. that looked natural on the screenshot tbh looks like just the ground texture is darker because its wet
wouldnt even notice that this was a shadow if you havent told me heh :3

Lol I see what you mean. When in motion it's very noticable, in a picture I can see how it just looks like wet.
