Tried all the fixes. Ran the DirectXsetup in the commonredist of TA to make sure I had the right DiretX setup. Downloaded the hotfix. Tried running it on both my monitors individually. Tried forcing windowed mode. Ran it in every compatibility mode. Nothing has worked, just keep getting the error.

I wonder if enabling one of the legacy options in win8 and win10 would help? For Roller Coaster Tycoon I could not run it on a laptop with 8.1 until I enabled of the legacy multimedia options in the Control Panel and had Windows install the libraries.

I have Win 10 (new 64 bit PC came w/ Win 8.1, i.e. immediately went to Win 10 [there may be a difference in newer install vs upgrade of older operating pre-8.1 systems to Win10). Orig TA ran w/ DirectX 5. I still have original TA disk which won't run or install DirectX5 and bought the game again through Steam. Of course, and it didn't run, says 'check directx setup', and suggestions (e.g. run compatibility) do not work, but have not tried patch/...ranger option). I found that some game programs on my old Win7 no longer run when installed on Win8.1 upgraded to Win10 [just trying to emphasize the distinction], e.g. Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire no longer works after Win7, so backwards compatibility is shortlived if you have an upgraded Win10 from pre-8.1 windows. Your next PC won't run them. Steam apparently doesn't have a clear support path. My brother's Win7 [yes, still Win7] runs Steam's TA fine. I am curious if any PC that started w/ Win8.1 or higher works okay. It's the older baggage on your PC that may be letting it run for now.

Easy fix that worked for me:

So, initaly, when launching TA through Steam, I kept getting the error: Environment initialization failed! Check your DirectX

On a whim, located the install folder for TA and launched the game directly by running TotalA.exe.
The game started perfectly. And since this first successful launch, I am now able to launch TA from Steam. So, in my case, it was a glitch between Steam and TA.

If the above does not work, then take a look at Peepswood's post describing how to use these patches:

Worked perfectly for me. Thanks, mate!

I can confirm that the suggested fix above works for me (just click on the exe itself and bypass steam). I just created a direct shortcut to the TA.exe file and it works! Something wrong with steam itself.

Thank you Junrall :IS2: :airstrike:

Hi guys! I found an answer and hopefully it will work for you too: in the steam app select Total Annihilation game then right click-> properties and set launch options. After that simply type -d which means "window mode". Worked fine for me. Good luck!

For me error "0xc0000022" got fixed by enabling DirectPlay found in Control Panel --> Programs and Features --> Turn Windows features on or off --> Legacy Components --> DirectPlay. Then got "Error: Environment Initialization failed. Check Direct X settings" and fixed by adding -d to TA shortcut to run in window mode. The menu screen does show in window mode but when the game starts it is full screen.

System:
Windows 10 Creator Build
HP Pavilion Laptop with both Nvidia Geforce GT and Intel HD Graphics
Intel Core i5

Have you enabled DirectPlay yet? I tried this as step 1 but the game still failed to launch due to the same error.

Finally, I had to right click the TotalA.exe file and run Troubleshoot Compatibility process. I allowed Windows 10 to make its recommended changes which was to scale it back to Windows XP 32bit (or something along those lines). I tested the fixes and it worked. I then tried to run the program from Steam itself and it worked.

I did not download additional patches or hotfixes – though every forum I checked out recommended them as a fix.
