I had a black screen on launch. Tried to use a patch I found on tauniverse which did jack. Still black screen on launch.

I experienced black screen too. And then I found that changing the in-game resolution (before starting first game) solved the issue, 1280x800 worked fine for me.

I was having the same issue for the last week. The way I managed to fix it was a little complicated. No idea why it works. First you need to open task manager and double check that TA.exe isn't running in the background. If it is end its task. Then open steam and uninstall the game. once uninstalled. open task manager again and double check it still isn't running. Then exit steam completely. if you are on windows go to the arrow at the bottom right of your desktop and right click the steam icon and exit. then go to the your game data folder where all of your games are installed. if your haven't moved your steam folder to a external hard drive. It should be in programfiles86x, steam, steamapps, common, then the total annihilation folder. delete this folder. and then clear it from your bin. Then go up one folder and click on the "downloading" folder and double check there isn't any files relating to TA. If there is delete them. Then in the search bar at the bottom left type %appdata% and open the corresponding folder and then double check that all files related to TA have been removed. If you get a dialogue that says something like cant delete this file because something else is using it. Ensure once again that steam and TA.exe have been closed. Force close steam in task manager if you have to. Then once you have made certain all files relating to TA have been removed permanently from your PC. then reopen steam and install TA.

All i know is when you first run it and it asks to install direct play you should say yes or if it wants access to anything to say yes.

I think if you don't have direct play you can install it by right clicking on start menu, Going into apps and features, Up in the right corner is "programs and features" and in there click on "turn windows features on/off" and look under legacy components.

Oh and with the black screen thing, Older games are picky sometimes with super sampling, or with Nvidia it's called DSR factors, So turning them off in Nvidia's control panel may help.

Also having rotating desktop pictures can mess with things too.

I have the same error with the DirectX setup. Unfortunately, uninstalling did not help.
....
I got it to work by calling TotalA.exe directly in the Steam folder. So it seems to be due to the call via Steam.

I have Windows 10, max resolution, there's a solution about this direct x error setup or not? I tried to load patches but nothing else. If not i ask to steam a refund...

It works very bad in Windows 10, to be honest. Unless you use DXWND or some kind of custom unofficial 3rd party (kekw) .dll

So you may need patience and lots of free time to set DXWND.
