Make sure to buy the Core Contingency and Battle Tactics expansions. CC offers 2 new campaigns w/ higher level play style on 4 new map types (jungle, earthquake, water and ice worlds - no more easy tutorial missions), whereas BT offers dozens of SP one-off themed battles and several new map types not available in campaign mode (acid and gem worlds, apocalyptic city map). Some of those are great fun.
There are also TONS of downloadable fan content, units, maps, custom AIs and mods, some so extensive they play like practically a different game. When Cavedog went bankrupt 2 decades ago, the lead programmer made the source code public, so the modding community has done some impressive stuff. As ppl said above, the TA MP is still great fun.
