Yea, I started this whole RTS genre by playing Supreme Commander. It is nostalgic for me cuz of that.
I wish there was a FAF for this game, it should be more popular. People are always playing Warcraft III or whatever when this is 100X better.
Sure TA's old and lacks a modern UI/engine and that's where Supcom takes over but it's still not there for me.
It's sad how games nowadays lack this ... ? ''soul''
I think that supcom's main problem is the scale of the maps compared to unit range and capabilities, it feels as though units are constrained a bit ? Bring me radar jammers, more defense options (vulcans !), more varied units for each faction and bigger maps, then I'd feel as though it's a true successor.
FAF=TA(time correction)
they are much higher than other strategies! (Except men of war)
personally for me.
In TA i like to set the resources for myself and the enemy, So for a challenge I'd set mine real low and set theirs quite high.
In the old days i saw people always playing with 10k resources each and i found that a bit boring.
Wish they would remaster TA.
@OP, TA is where the RTS that wasn't just Suck and spend started, TA is still fun to play but I admit sup comm is obviously a lot more polished but as one of the earlier posts said still doesn't quite have the TA feel which is just awesome.
Unit balance was better because a T2 unit wasn't just able to destroy large amount of T1 units.
Most units lost their uniqueness because each higher tier was basically just an stat upgrade.
There are things that I do like, like Commander being able to upgrade himself.
The features where metal storage and power plants affected factories and extractors where also nice things.
It often made me build a lot of them together for a bigger risk vs a bigger reward.
Air was nerfed in the way that it only attack air or only attack ground. Which they did in either a mod or as a final patch to the old TA game. That was a load of bull btw.
Hawks should be able to attack both ground and air. When they where made air only I stopped using them. I just bring with me AA units instead then that travel at the same speed as the others.
I like Total Annihilation for more than just its influence on RTS as a genre.
It's got charm, style, and class.
But that's not to say that the game is perfect, as it is definitely more of a product of its time compared to Supreme Commander.
And on the other hand, I love Supreme Commander because of the innovations, style, and freedom.
Both games have their obvious upsides and downsides, which is far more apparent in TA than SupCom, however they both offer unique styles of play and map variety, the latter of which goes for a more arena and symmetrical style of map design instead of trying to make balanced asymmetrical maps.
For what it's worth, I enjoy SupCom: FA a bit more due to its more modern build, allowing for easier multiplayer, and the freedom of space that it gives the player.
That said, TA is a it more nuanced in its approach with smaller maps and more restrictive features, such as tiny hills that obstruct placement and make you think about where to place structures.
Then we come to Planetary Annihilation...
A good idea bogged down by the company being scummy and having a half baked underdeveloped engine when it first launched.
