I started with PITF then GWTC i play SP only which i must admit the AI letts both down but GWTC is slightly better, a wee bit more variaty and something i cant really put my finger on.

So best wait for a more informed answer from one of the VETS who play MP also.

What i am hoping for is the next CC game called "THE BLOODY FIRST" ( wihich should be out early next year ) to be a much better game.

Cant help but think that this will be the one to top all the rest and will at last begin to show the true potential of this game, i truly hope that ttime will be taken to get everything just right and as a SP see a massive improvement in the AI.

As i said though a far better answer will be able to inform you to which game is best and why.

CC3 remake, more units than every other close combat and covers a larger portion of WW2 than the newer CC's. CC3 has better unit selection with the point system and also the editor is my favourite on CC3. Sorry for the grammar its late and iam tired.

This latest CC seems to have taken a step backwards with the AI.

CC3 Remake: Cross of Iron. For every point Widow Maker said above. I loved the feeling of building my own Kampfgruppe and being able to respond to different challenges in different ways.

All CC games are great, including this one :) Still CC3 was one of the best, cause it had the point system and you had to fight 4 years of a desperate struggle. There was just so many tank battles, with great tanks, be it Russian or German. I like the Caen CC cause it keeps a lot of the old game principles, and adding those movers is a great way of making it even more real; there is nothing so fun than to ride those halftracks and push the pedal to the objective; also moving the At guns by track is way more simple than just pushing 200 meters, just to relocate.

CC2 was the one i played back in the day the most, and still remains my favoite, the newer games were too slow paced for my liking

+1 on CC3 - The Russian Front.

Customizable battle group, loads of various unit types, good maps.

Had loads of fun with Battle of the Bulge (CC4? or 5?), but it was far more restricted when it came to creating your perfect combat lineup.

Didn't play any of the remakes for pricing reasons.

I've always liked a bridge too far and the remake last stand at arnhem the best. Mostly because the campaign and battle variety. The campaign is great because it revolves around the bridges and you get variety because you have americans, brits, germans, poles, and netherlands troops. Also I really like how there's tank battles but there are also a lot of infantry vs. infantry battles as well. That's my problem with caen and some of the other games. Too much tank battles.

I do like CC3 in that you can create your own force and bring it through an entire war. But the excess of tank fights kind of hurts it. Late war the infantry just seems to be cannon fodder.

True to a degree, but you always do need an infantry screen else expensive *BOOM* occurs.

Even if you just use the support pool to field them, and keep your lineup heavy on tanks, there's always a need for infantry.

CC5 mods, especially GJS. I also positively loved the Battle For Berlin mod. CC4 was a pretty good game. The AI in this release is certainly a lot more challenging than those days, however.

Out of the box, definetly CC2: A bridge too far

-Best manual
-Best gameplay
-Best Videos (only videos I don't skip)
-One of the best battle makers (single battle editor) of the series (CCMT may be the best)
-Best AI and don't give me that bs that it was the small maps, it was not it! Something else happened that turned the AI into a dull opponent. CC3, CC4 and CC5 all have small maps and the AI just crawls and crawls around, in CC2 they came running for you! or even ambushed you!

I would like to have a remake of A bridge too far on the new 3D engine
