Read a few weeks ago that O'Connor is reworking Firefight yet again and is aiming to release it on Steam with a few upgrades. A new-ish version of it is currently available on iOS as well; I have it on my phone, of all things.
I've been playing Close Combat since about 1998 or so, and I find that Firefight and CC are similar, and both a lot of fun. IMO the Close Combat games tend to have better graphics, more campaigns, more obsessive historical detail, etc. Not sure how Firefight stands up to the ORIGINAL Close Combat; it's been way too long since I've played around with the oldest iteration of CC.
Firefight's main strengths are in its elegant simplicity and its ability to reliably provide raging combat with unpredictable results. It's a hell of a lot of fun, honestly. Whether it's your cup of tea or not largely depends on what you want from your RTT game ;)
