However, I share the same feelings about the pace of the games. It is quite slow, and I think this is what puts a lot of people off. That's why I'm working on a "Small Map Mod" that will reduce the size of the maps to make the combat more intense and shorten the battles at the same time. To see a preview, see this video http://youtu.be/7fMMCrSYxYQ
It's still in progress but should be done in the next week or so.
I certainly agree with you. When I had first started playing the series, back then the game also felt very slow compared to other mainstream RTS games. This is true when you play single-player, since the AI sits on its a** and does not do much most of the time.
However, try playing against a human opponent and you will see that you wish the game was in fact slower. You usually end up doing a lot of multitasking and micromanaging when you play this game multi-player.
As said by crackwise, there is a lot to do, and micro managing each unit in different areas of the map can be a lot especially if they are engaged in different areas. Speeding the game up wouldn't be a good thing.
I think there is never wrong to give users more options, developers please improve this or help us with mod (best if it was also made for older CC parts). Is it really impossible to mod to just speed up game, I'm not modder but it seems not that complicated? I think more people would like this and it could add new fans of series.
ps- If also saves option during battles would be added I thing bigger maps could be possible and enjoyable but this will be maybe possible in a new game with newer maps? Making smaller maps is not the way.
Pretty much what we have been saying for years. However, the developers seem to have their own priority system, which tends to prioritize less important to downright unnecessary things. The in-game save option for sure is the most vital thing to include, it will at least be a remedy against random multiplayer crashes.
