I do not mind pvp, not at all but I do not enjoy the "kill everyone on sight" kind of open world survival games! I want to be part of a community, build and make my mark upon the land, and yes, defend it (or attack others if needed! XP ) to make it prosper!
Yea, you can (right from the start) create a tribe, drop your totem and your area (25m around it) is protected - containers on the ground? no one can open them (unless you change their permissions allowing for it).
There is a PvP server, and a PvE server so, you are covered ;)
If you are interested, in the following video I talk about the game - things I enjoy about it, things that I would like to see - and I also compare some of its features to Wurm Unlimited, that being the last game like this I played...

For me that is a good thing! I really liked the depth in Wurm Online. I played as the "evil" race, cant remember their name but we got punished for putting corpses into a grave and eating dead people was totally ok according to our god and lore. Despite that damn fungus that killed any plant but our race could absorb it and heal so alot of players liked it...I still managed to dig out a hilltop and create a Zen type of garden, with fountains, lots of maple trees and with weeping willows in the middle! XD
PvP is not griefing, but as you said, waaay to many think that just because you can, you should be an a**hole.
There are many theories as of why. Which I do not care, I simply do not understand nor enjoy that kind of mentality games.
Overall i had a good weekend on the war server.
As far as if you should get this game, I can say that this is the game im currently playing, over the years iv'e gathered up 8 accounts and i logged into at least 6 of them this weekend.
I own The Division and Fallout 4, Yet i have 0 hours played this week, for all of the shortcomings and problems xsyon has, its better than most crap out there.
There are things though that I am looking for, maybe you guys can help me. Wurm is a great game, but there are so many things I wish that were more automated. For instance chopping wood. I always thought it would be cool to have "saw mill" in game where you can feed logs into and it would chop it up into logs.
Not sure what the game dev here has in store for this game. I would really love to see a "road' map of features he/she intends to add. Maybe that would help me want to get more invested. Any thoughts?
The road map can be found here:
http://www.xsyon.com/content.php/69-xsyon-sandbox-mmorpg-apocalypse-2012-development
The part of the current round that was specifically being worked on is:
Creature revisions
Creature path finding revised
Combat revisions
As far as automation i can say that Xsyon is the opposite of that wish and is very click heavy.
Speed is determined by skill so the guy with 100 skill in logging will cut down trees faster than the 5 skill guy.
I'm fine with clicking a lot. Wurm has a lot of that too, to me it just makes sense to have built in game mechanics like simple machinery to do tasks like taking logs and sawing them into planks etc.
