How does eye of the North work?

I'm interested on buying guild wars on the next steam sale. If I get the expansion does it get added to the trilogy client? Is it it's own client?

You access it by taking a quest from either Lion's Arch in Prophecies, Kaineng Center in Factions or Kamadan in Nightfall. So it's integrated into the existing game and extends content for the trilogy.

It's available to any of your PvE characters that are level 10 or higher; when your character is at or above the required level and you haven't taken the quest yet you will get a pop up message telling you which NPC to talk to to get the quest whenever you enter one of the above port towns.

Edit: I should mention that when you purchase the trilogy and Eye of the North you will get a CD Key for each and the EoTN key will need to be added to the same account that you use for the trilogy for the expansion to be accessible in game.

So I need to log into arena net via a browser to actually be able to even launch the game?

It's been so long I don't remember the specifics but looking at the guide here on Steam:

It appears you can create the account inside the game itself.

I do have an accoutn since i bought GW2 back before EoD released but this level of clunkyness is unexpected.

You'll receive a key on steam and you have to add it to your account ingame
