You may want to note that there is a free trial[www.guildwars.com] for Guild Wars if you want to try the original to see if you even like it. There are a lot of players passionate about both games, and which you play really comes down to personal preference. Generally, if you like strategy, character management, and a great story, Guild Wars 1 is probably the way to go, so long as you can get past it being an older game. If you prefer action, group play (i.e. zergs), and crafting systems, Guild Wars 2 will probably be more to your taste. Both games have excellent PVP components if that's your primary interest.
The biggest problem in Guild Wars 1 is that it can be frustrating to play for first-time players without a guide in front of you; Guild Wars 2 is easy to just pick-up and go. The biggest problem with Guild Wars 2 is that after awhile characters start to feel very similar, with very limited skill selection and all classes essentially being built as DPS classes; Guild Wars 1 has hundreds of skills and classes tend to play very differently depending on your personal style.
Personally, I have 100% characters on both games, and Guild Wars 1 is what I keep coming back to. If you plan on playing both, however, you'll certainly want to start with the original first. :)
Guild Wars 2 can be pretty fun but I definitely haven't been sticking with it like I did the original Guild Wars. After a while things seem to get a little repetitive, and the story wasn't that interesting to me. If you are into large scale PVP though, GW2 has World vs. World which can be a lot of fun.
I would definitely check out the Guild Wars 1 free trial and see how you like it! I've played GW1 for a really long time and I think it's a really great game :)
I have played most mmorpgs that have come out since 1990's from Rising Force Online, to Archlord, Ragnarok, Silk Road online, Aion, Atlantica Online, and many more. I have enjoyed most of them as well. In the end though, the pvp is what keeps me in a game.
Guild Wars 2 basically has two PVP modes right now: World vs. World, which pits three servers against each other by rank, and Arena, which is your basic capture-the-point, king-of-the-hill, "deathmatch" mode. The former (WvW) has four giant maps, one for each server where the "home team" has a strategic advantage, and the fourth where each server is on equal footing. Victories in WvW are tallied at the end of the week and change your server's rank, meanwhile capturing a key location for your server might give the server various server-wide bonuses. The latter, Arena-style, has more standard 8v8 PVP in both public and private arenas. You can read more about GW2 PVP on their official Wiki[wiki.guildwars2.com]. It should be mentioned that players in GW2 have access to PVP from level 1, and are "up-leveled" to the max level if needed, though in WvW skills and stats need to be unlocked manually as normal in PVE.
Guild Wars 1's PVP scene has suffered a bit since the release of GW2, but some of it is still very active, especially during week-long events that grant bonus faction (one type of currency) for participation. When creating a character in GW1, you have the option to create a PVP-only character that is max-level, has max-stats, and access to max-gear. Regular characters ("role-playing") can access PvP as well once they reach the maximum level (20). GW1 offers a ton of different PvP types and with literally thousands of skills to choose from, your character can be customized exactly to your style which is a big difference from GW2 where each class gravitates naturally simply toward the most powerful skills available. You can read more about PVP on my guide or on the official Wiki[wiki.guildwars.com].
In GW2 you are 250 years on from GW1 and things are built, like the towns in Gendarran and the great cities of Divinity's reach and the Grove. In GW1 you are Human's leaving Ascalon to the Charr who overran it. You make a new life in the uninhabited Northern regions of Kryta and you found new towns and the city. You learn why the Charr attacked your homeland. You learn about an old race who are human's enemy. You meet the survivor (and doom) of Orr. You uncover the truth of the White mantle and the Shining Blade factions in Kryta and you arrive at the beginning of the Pale tree's life and the construction of the floating city of Rata Sum.
You know all of these things in GW2 but in GW1...you lived through them, you helped forge them, you are living inside history.
So i started in prophecies but was interested in factions for the festival so i made a new charecter and started questing.... I cant even get past the first few quests, why are there enemies double and triple my level in the starter quest area in cantha?
If you're a melee class you'll have a harder time when you get to the Afflicted enemies as they explode when they die. Btw do you have the Fire Imp summoning stone from the GOTY bonus items? It helps a lot on lower levels in any campaign.
When you reach the mainland, it's recommended to pop over to Nightfall to grab some heroes. You can make a stronger team out of them than henchmen.
I figured it out i was just going the wrong way, i found my way that was more safe.
Now i keep running into issues, not only can i not "enter mission" in my party box on my main pc it just freezes my pc.... i play on my craptop now which sucks... but now im at a mission where ive gotta follow an npc to a village and kill someone, and the npc just stops halfway there and doesnt continue. fml every step of the way i run into issues.
i contacted support and they really tried to help me but ultimatley their solutions led nowhere
