hey, welcome to the game

Henchman don't gain experience the same way that players do. instead they have a specifically assigned level based on the last outpost they were in. So for example if you're in ascalon city your henchmen will be level 3 but if you're at yak's bend they will be level 8. and so on. Bringing henchmen is highly recommended especially if you're new to the game. Most content will be very difficult without a party to back you up!

Later on (or if you play a Nightfall character, from the start basically), you also gets heroes, which is more "permanent" version of henchmens, that have their own level, that you can customize their skills and gear, mostly freely yourself. While still AI controlled, you can even tell them to use specific skills as well when needed, or even forbid them using some of their skill, unless you specifically ask them to

While they don't level up, technically they do share gold, experience and loot drops from defeated enemies. Or to put it another way you'll get less gold, experience and loot if you have henchmen in your party but it's nothing to worry about. You can actually flag henchmen out of range while in a mission or explorable area to net your character more experience from kills but for normal play it wouldn't be worth doing.

neat cant wait for that, cause if they're gonna steal might as well put it to use
Yeah, I wouldn't worry about the gold and items that henchmen/heroes take. It's just the cost of doing business since the only time you'll ever be rolling solo is for missions that require it or if you're solo farming or something like that. Anyone playing the game suffers those same losses so no reason to sweat it.

they don't level up. they do however reduce your gold per every henchman/hero you include in your party. also the drops will now be shared between members, so your drops also will be reduced. That's why the game has farming builds that focuses on playing the game solo.
